Saint Paul wants its neighborhoods to be safer and more pedestrian friendly. Speeding traffic is a major challenge to that ideal. Resident artist Steven Woodward participated in community forums on the topic and developed the Art of Traffic Calming as a response. Beginning in June, 2008, these colorful art signs (30 of them) will be installed in particularly challenged neighborhoods on a rotating basis. As they convey wonder and joy, their strong graphic presence and the surprise of encountering them will, all hope, slow folks down.
