Designed by artist James Carpenter, The Schubert Club’s Heilmaier Bandstand on Raspberry Island is a wonderful venue for summer concerts. A stainless steel web supports 264 layered glass pieces in a form evokes the double-curves of boat hulls. Star Tribune architecture critic Linda Mack hailed the bandstand as “sheer poetry. A sinuous shell of glass and steel, it is, like a poem, elliptical, essential and evocative”, in naming it one of Minnesota’s outstanding projects in 2002. Carpenter was awarded a prestigious MacArthur Foundation fellowship in 2004.
